Description
Wind Power an old idea
A windmill is a machine which converts the energy of wind into rotational energy by means of vanes called sails or blades. Originally windmills were developed for milling grain for food production. In the course of history the windmill was adapted to many other industrial uses. An important application was to pump water. Windmills used for generating electricity are commonly known as wind turbines.
The Farm 4285 State Highway 57, Sturgeon Bay, WI (920) 743-6666
The Farm in beautiful Door County, is a special place.
A quote about The Farm in the Reader's Digest book, Off the Beaten Path says it best:
"Children and adults as well, are likely to be charmed, entertained and educated."
The Farm is a delight for people of all ages. As a living museum of rural America, it is a blending of cultural, historical, agricultural, ecological, recreational and educational values. Every year, The Farm virtually explodes with newborn and new-hatched creatures. Goat kids, piglets, foals, calves and lambs are born throughout the season; chicks hatch everyday in the observation incubator.

Windpumps are used extensively on farms and ranches. These mills feature a large number of blades so that they turn slowly with considerable torque in low winds and be self regulating in high winds. A tower-top gearbox and crankshaft convert the rotary motion into reciprocating strokes carried downward through a rod to the pump cylinder below. The farm wind pump was invented by Daniel Halladay in 1854. The multi-bladed wind turbine atop a lattice tower made of wood or steel hence became, for many years, a fixture of the landscape throughout rural America.
