Description
Turtle Time on the Rocks
Stoney Creek Metro Park, Michigan
Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (the crown group of the superorder Chelonia), characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. "Turtle" may either refer to the Testudines as a whole, or to particular Testudines which make up a form taxon that is not monophyletic. Like other reptiles, turtles are ectotherms—their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment, commonly called cold-blooded. Like other amniotes, they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water.

According to the oral stories and traditions of the Great Lakes Woodland Indians, the turtle is a powerful symbol. One legend details how the turtle's back provided a base for the first land that was formed in the midst of the great waters. Mackinac Island takes its name from a word in the Ottawa language meaning "Great turtle". Even today, turtles hold power and meaning in our lives. Turtles are an important link in the web of our living planet and it is up to everyone to ensure they remain.
