Halloween is only weeks away and the pumpkins in the field are starting to turn orange.
Of course you have your eye on the perfect pumpkin. You know the one that weighs in at more than you do.
Oh what should you carve this year, a scary face?
Or something artsy like wine and cheese?
But that is only two ideas and there are so many pumpkins to yet be carved.
So how will you decorate this year?
I know you say it is too early, but soon the moon will be full and the trick or treaters will be marching the streets looking for a scary treat.
Please do not rack your skull - just hit the store and hand out some candy, or cash.

A little did you know on Chimps and Gorillas
If you have ever been to a Zoo with Chimps and Gorillas you will notice that they are either at a great distance from the guests
or they are behind a heavy glass.
This is because the DNA behind the chimps and gorillas is similar enough to human DNA that they can catch a cold or disease from us.
So the next time you are at the Zoo you will know a little more about our closest DNA relative.

The Native American people call Elk, "Wapiti", or "light colored deer".
I had the pleasure to spend a day with a large Michigan Elk herd near Gaylord, Michigan in May. I found the entire herd to be very accepting of my human form and camera. I was careful not to get too close and risk a possible charge. The Elk are very large (350 to 900 lbs) animals with their backs well over my shoulder and with a full set of antlers I would say they would be 7-9ft off of the ground. If they decided to charge I could not out run them, so I was happy to see that they accepted me with only mild curiosity.
If I approached too close, I was given the nervous lick, that let me know that I had stepped into the danger zone, at that point I slowly backed up till the licking of the lips stopped.
I did not get to see the full set of antlers on the bull (Male) elk, as the elk lose their antlers each March and start to grow them back in May. By late summer they will grow full size antlers (up to 4ft above the head), in time for the late summer breeding season. I did see a few of the bull elk that had a fresh set of sprouting horns covered in new velvet.
I was honored several times with some of the bull elks lifting their heads to bugle. The sound is surprisingly loud. It definitely gets the attention of his females in the harem.
All of the elk currently in Michigan, are the result of re-population. Michigan's native elk disappeared around 1875. Today it is estimated that Michigan has 900+ elks in the wild, and managed with a limited number of hunting permits.
One of the greatest honors as a photographer is being accepted by a wild animal and being able to photograph them in their native environment. This was one of the great moments in the May photo adventure.

It is cold outside, the winds are blowing and the snow is falling like fine grains of beach sand. The snow crunches under your feet and you can see your breath, as you make the way down the trail. The wild life looks upon you from high above in the trees and wonders what that strange moving shape is below. Is it human or a predator? The squirrels flag their tales and wave then as if to send a distress warning. Beware beware. The old watch squirrel finally gets brave enough to check it out. This shape that exhales a frosty mist is a friend not a foe. The bird feeders are refilled and the journey begins. As I leave to head back, I can hear the little feet, they scamper to the sound of the wild wind. When I turn to look back there are black, brown and gray fur balls bouncing towards the seeds of life, I chuckle as the bird feeder will be empty again tomorrow and it begins again a new.

McLaneGoetzStudioLLC.com on "Promotion for Nonprofits and Small Businesses" workshop
This session is a must for any group seeking the big promotional bang for few bucks. Promoting a small business, non-profit organization or cause on a shoestring budget calls for resourcefulness and imagination. In this two-hour session, participants will learn how to create partnerships with other organizations to maximize media coverage and financial resources. We will explore the importance of targeting specific groups of people, identifying places frequented by a target audience and developing promotional tools to reach audiences where they are at little or no cost. The group will learn how to write news releases, public service announcements and post promotional notices on other web sites. We’ll also discuss the vast array of alternative media, including messages on church bulletins, grocery bags, gas pumps, etc. The group will also learn to develop production timelines. Most importantly, participants will learn how to tap into the powerful network of in-kind contributions.

Saturday Feb 18th, 2012. I am up early the heart of nature is calling for spring and I hear the sounds of nature outside my window chirping.
Nature is my inspiration and it is awesome in the stories it tells. Take the time to walk with nature and you will find that that you are significant and insignificant in the world. You will question your purpose on this earth and see that all things are one. The leaves that were once green now lay on the winter floor and feed the next generation. What will you leave behind to feed the next generation. What is your calling today. I hope I have inspired you to go walk on natures mighty path and reflect on your journey on this planet and what you can give back to the next generation.

From June through September, meetings are held on the first Friday of the month at 7:00 p.m. From October through May meetings are held on the first and third Fridays of the month at 7:00 p.m. The first meeting of the month focuses on educating our members. The meeting generally consists of presentations that would be of interest to all the members and an image show where members can show their pictures and ask for comments from fellow members. The second meeting of the month focusses on feedback through competitive evaluation. Members are invited to submit digital images that are reviewed at the meeting by experienced photographers acting as judges. They provide suggestions on what is good and what may be improved with each submitted photo. This is done in a group setting so that all attending can benefit.

Today was awesome. We decided to check out some of Michigans hidden treasures. We drove North to a little know Nature Center - Called Seven Ponds Nature Center. What a great place. If you have kids or just nature loving adults this is the place to be. Not only do they have miles of trails in the nature park they also offer great programs. Todays program was put on by Wild Life Recovery Association 531 S. Coleman Road Shepherd, Michigan 48883 989-772-1538. Details are provided as if you get a chance to see their Birds of Prey show, it is the best. Joe Rogers puts on a real great show. You get to hear about the secret lives of Owls and Falcons. Peregrine Falcons, Barred Owls, Snowy Owls, tiny Screech Owls, Krestrels, Rough- legged Hawks, amd just for Halloweem a Michigan Vulture. This is show to take your kids to, as it is a real Hoot. You get up close to the birds as they eye you as prey, could freak you out if the right person was not handling the birds. They also provide little known facts - such as the turkey buzzard has see thru nostrels and cleans them with its toes. (Just the kind of fact that you need to file away for a future game show challenge.)
A truly great day.

What an awesome day I made a last minute decision to catch the Pet Adoption Fair at Frontier Town in Romeo.
Being a Michigan Native of 48 yrs, I thought I had seen all of Michigans creatures. Well today I discovered one I had not seen before. Thanks to an exhibit by Kool Kritter Education and Romeo Animal Placement, I was able to see an animal rescue of a native species - The Michigan Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum). I was informed the spotted Salamander they had rescued was found in the 32 mile area. Apparently a dog had found it and the dogs' owner knew enough to call Romeo Animal Placement for help. 586-752-5210.
This seldom seen animal likes to live in mature, moist woodlands with access to vernal ponds for breeding. They spend most of the year in underground burrows, but are sometimes found under rotting logs or leaf litter. They eat small invertebrates, such as worms, insects, spiders, slugs, and snails.
Andrea Szewczyk the owner was kind enough to let me photograph some of her other rescues as well.
A Tortoises (Testudinidae) named Tank, Opal a Hedge Hog, and Pancake a rather large Savannah monitor. Savanah Monitors are found in the rocky savannah regions from Western and Central Africa to Zaire and Northern Angola.

Shooting close to home today at Wolcott Mill Metropark, Michigan. The Park is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, with about 200 reenactors, reenacting the First Battle of Manassas by Confederate forces or the First Battle of Bull Run by Union forces. The battle was fought on July 21, 1861, in Virginia, this event is seen as a tribute to the milestone anniversary.
It is an awesome and beautiful day for a battle Temperatue of 75+ F degrees and full sun.
