Description
This elk seemed to be posing for me.
The elk also known as wapiti (Cervus canadensis) is one of the largest species of the deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females. My time with the elk in the Northern part of Michigan, was met with a smile. Given that the elk herd has members that weigh up to 900 pounds I was happy they accepted me as one of their own, as I am afraid I would not be able to out run them if they decided to charge. These are amazingly beautiful animals, that welcomed me and my camera into the herd as a curiosity. I was careful to keep my distance and the longer I stayed with them in a non threatening manner the closer they came to me. Several times I was close enough to feel their breath.
